CHAPTER 7

Third Declension Nouns

You will come to hate the third declension. Trust me. There are a dozen endings in it, and you just have to remeber which is which and what gender each one is, since it's not indicated by the ending as nicely as it is with the first and second declension. Time for another verse of Old MacDonald:

Decline a third declension noun!
US-IS-I-EM-E!
And then decline the plural noun!
ES-UM-IBUS-ES-IBUS!
With the nomative first
And the genative next
Dative and accusative
Ablative and vocative!
Decline a third declension noun!
US-IS-I-EM-E!

This, naturally, only applies to the male and female versions, and you have to remember that the '-US' is a placeholder and that the vocative is the same as the nominative, just as in second and first declension, respectively. Isn't Latin fun? Then, of course, there are the neuters:

What do you do with a 3D neuter?
What do you do with a 3D neuter?
What do you do with a 3D neuter
When declining Latin?

'-US' is the single, '-A' is the plural!
'-US' is the single, '-A' is the plural!
'-US' is the single, '-A' is the plural!
Nom, Acc, Voc in pattern!

This is more or less easy to remember because it's almost the same as in second declension, except you've got your placeholder '-us' instead of the constant '-um'.
